Why Wood?

This question is not often asked but is easy to answer. It is an easy medium to learn to work with only a few basic tools. What about using Metal, Stone, Epoxy Resin, Ice Blocks, Yarn, or Leather? The list can go on and on, and all of the above can be used to express individual artistic talent, but wood has been a favorite over the centuries because it is readily available and relatively easy to manipulate, as well as being intrinsically beautiful. Whether it’s an old tree trunk, cabinet grade hardwood, or driftwood, most woodcarver’s favorite is Basswood (also known as Linden or Limewood). It is by far the choice of whittlers and professionals alike. Whatever wood choices you make, start making those woodchips fly! The next Desert Woodcarvers Show is right around the corner, but you still have time to create that prize-winning work of art. Two days of meeting old friends, buying tools, telling tall tales and purchasing wood blocks for future projects is what everyone looks forward to each year. Put it on your calendar and be prepared to have some fun.

Have your woodcarvings seen!
